While oral medications for in office adult minimal sedation are inherently safe when providers prescribe the right drug at the right dose and the right procedure, one may be less sure if it is for the right patient; especially when our patients are not truthful about the drugs they consume.  This course complements other adult minimal sedation courses by emphasizing the importance of knowing the “how” and the “when” to employ reversal agents in keeping patients safe.

Objectives to be covered: 

• Discuss the primary indication for flumazenil and potential contraindications
• Understand the appropriate stocking and modes of delivery of flumazenil
• Recognize the challenges of drug interactions and when naloxone may be indicated
• Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of specific routes of delivery of reversal agents
• Describe the mechanism of action and pharmacological properties of flumazenil and naloxone
